host intensive summer sessions with the dual goals of growing participants’ ceramic skills and knowledge and leading an in-depth exploration of Jingdezhen and its unique ceramic possibilities and histories. As a group we tour the city making stops at museums, factories, artisan workshops, artist studios, markets, exhibitions, and amazing scenic spots all around the city and the surrounding countryside, all while making work for a session-end exhibition under the guidance and with the inspiration of a professional workshop leader (or two) from the field of international ceramics. We also do our best to help our participants to mix with the culture of Jingdezhen, and show off the fact that Jingdezhen is both a sneaky-good food city, and possibly the youngest and hippest art capital to be found. This residency will focus on ceramic surface, pattern, and the empirical study of archives and collections around the region through excursions to museums, scenic areas, and cultural sites. We will discuss contemporary methodologies and approaches to designing objects with the surface in mind, building layers of information as we integrate a variety of new and traditional processes picked up both in studio and through visits to factories, workshops, and the studios of other artists. The Session will begin before arriving in Jingdezhen with the designing of imagery to be realized using glazes, transfers, overglazes, decals, painting and carving. The production of forms for these images to layer upon will be the focus of the early session. We will build with access to the wide variety of ceramic processes available in JDZ while working with potters, mold makers, slab builders, bisque producers, and new technology to design and produce objects in clay. In-studio lessons will move between process-based workshops to individual critiques and discussions around contemporary art, craft, and design and will be led by Future Retrieval, local masters of traditional skills, and the MenLo staff. Future Retrieval’s work speaks to the wonders of the past while simultaneously addressing imbalances of art history that too-often neglect so-called decorative or minor arts. Davis and Parker currently reside in Scottsdale, Arizona where Parker is an Associate Professor in the School of Art at Arizona State University. Their most recent solo exhibitions include Crystal-Walled Seas at Denny Gallery in 2022 and Close Parallel at the Cincinnati Art Museum in 2021. Future Retrieval’s work is held in numerous collections such as the Arizona State University Ceramics Research Center (AZ), Cincinnati Art Museum (OH), 21C Museum/Hotel (NC), Society of Dresden Porcelain Art (Germany), and Jingdezhen International Studio (China). They have exhibited both nationally and internationally and received prestigious awards and residencies such as the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, IASPIS, and Bemis Center Arts Residency. Refine your skills or try something new in the perfect place to explore clay, surrounded by expertise, tradition, and experienced makers. Helen’s artwork twists foundational industrial ceramic techniques to create subtle and perplexing formal contemporary works. She’s not afraid of things going wrong, in fact, she believes it’s taught her all she knows! In this three-week ceramic and modeling intensive you’ll have the opportunity to push your practice to new heights and take risks with the goal of creating beautiful works in clay and expanding your skillset. Whether you want to learn to produce your own designs from start to finish or work with the artisans and craftsmen of Jingdezhen to produce something beyond the scope of your studio practice this is the opportunity for you. An in-studio focus on form and process will complement out-of-studio visits to factories, workshops, historical locales, and scenic wonders of the porcelain capital of the world. She worked in the film industry in the late 90’s as a model maker at Shepperton Studios, building scale models of Trafalgar Square and props for Lost In Space among other productions. In 2017 she graduated from a Masters degree at the RCA London. As an artist she has exhibited widely and has garnered honors; gaining a post graduate scholarship at Konstfack, Sweden 2018, winner of the Franz Rising Star in 2018,&nbsp;Zsu Zsi Roboz scholar 2019 and the HRH Presidential Award for Endangered Crafts 2020 from the Heritage Craft Association. She was&nbsp;shortlisted in the Blanc de Chine International Ceramics competition 2023, Hari Art Prize, UK 2022 and more recently won the People’s Choice Be Still Media, USA 2024. Helen has taught and lectured in universities, colleges and studios including Central St Martins, Middlesex University, Morley College, and The Kiln Rooms. “Nibbling” series that has continued with me from my undergraduate to masters studies at Jingdezhen Ceramic University. The “Cannibalization” series simulates the decay process of chinese traditional wooden building components through depiction in ceramic. It is my reflection on chinese traditional culture in the contemporary context. From the taoist point of view, the "void" and "nothing" of the decaying object is the result of the transformation from a solid to less-than solid state through weathering and erosion. This shift embodies the passage of time. What came before the "nothing" is lost, or remains as an invisible force. That force as it exists in relation to our culture remains in our blood, giving some continuation to our ancient way of thinking and ways of life. intensive summer sessions with the dual goals of growing participants’ ceramic skills and knowledge and exploring jingdezhen and its unique ceramic possibilities. As a group we tour the city making stops at museums, factories, artisan workshops, artist studios, markets, exhibitions, and amazing scenic spots all around the city and the surrounding countryside, all while making work for a session-end exhibition under the guidance and with the inspiration of a professional workshop leader from the field of international ceramics. We also do our best to help our participants to mix with the culture of Jingdezhen, and show off the fact that Jingdezhen is both a sneaky-good food city, and possibly the youngest and hippest art capital to be found. Housing, studio materials, studio space, entrance fees, assistance, and transportation within Jingdezhen are all included in our session fee of 14,000 RMB. June 16 - July 6 Join artist Natalia Arbelaez in a three-week workshop exploring Jingdezhen and all its ceramic history, technology, and craft together. This residency will focus on mentorship, conceptual theory, and professional development. We will discuss ideas of cultural influences and research and how we use these in our practice. Sculptural making will also be a focal point in the classroom, From gestural loose making to the more modeled form. We will go from the sketch to the physical and all sculptural techniques that best execute an idea. In 2016-2017 she was a Rittenberg Fellow at Clay Art Center; Port Chester, New York and was awarded the Inaugural Artaxis Fellowship that funded a residency to Watershed in Newcastle, ME. Her work has been exhibited internationally, in museums, galleries, and included in various collections, such as the Everson Museum and MAD Museum. She has been recognized by NCECA as a 2018 Emerging Artist and was a 2018-19 resident artist at the Ceramics Program at Harvard University. Natalia was an artist in residence at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City and a Resident Artist at AMOCA in Pomona, CA. Natalia on Her Work "My work takes the place of a storyteller, from my personal narratives of my Colombian family’s immigration to the research of pre-Columbian South American presence, to my American, latchkey, after school cartoon upbringing. Each of these identities plays a role in my work to illustrate a self portrait of what it is like to be a Mestizo, Colombian, and American hybrid. I combine these stories with research, familial narratives, and cartoon embellishments that create surreal stories, much to my efforts, of the likes of Gabriel García Márquez. A way to autobiographically narrate history with its ups and downs of humor and tears. I use my work to research undervalued histories, such as Latin American, Amerindian, and Women of Color. I work with how these identities are lost through conquest, migration, and time, gained through family, culture, exploration, and passed down through tradition, preservation, and genetic memory. In my research I have found value in my histories and aim to help continue my cultures by preserving and honoring them. I’ve embraced my use of craft and clay not only in my process but also in historical and cultural research. In my research of lost, conquered, and overlooked communities, I have found that craft belongs in my pursuit. I relate to the role of the craftsperson, often linked to women’s work, working class, and cultural tradition. The material also plays an important role as I examine the history of my ancestral material. Like how Terra-cotta has been seen historically as a lesser material and Majolica glaze brought over from Europe and used as a surface to hide terra-cotta, metaphors I use describe colonization." She is an educator at the London Sculpture Workshop and City Lit and a non-executive director of Gaada, a visual arts workshop in Shetland. She has exhibited her work extensively in the U.K. and abroad including exhibitions at Christies,&nbsp;Unit 1 Gallery,&nbsp;Sluice Gallery,&nbsp;Thames Side Studios Gallery,&nbsp;The Horse Hospital. She has twice been included in the British Ceramics Biennale with a shortlist award in 2017.&nbsp;In 2020 she was selected for a residency and exhibition at Taattisten Tila Finland. Alex on her work“I am interested in clay’s relationship to the body and how it can embody ideas around trace, materiality, sensation and haptics.&nbsp; I look to create a sense of uncertainty; an ambiguity of form and surface whilst attempting to capture a presence of life or movement contained within a material.&nbsp; Through processes such as adding ink into clay bodies, creating drawings with clay, adding organic materials and working with found clay in all it’s different states from liquid to solid to dust, my ideas expand outwards. These have often become installations of fragments of fired and unfired clay bodies. &nbsp; While some of my sculptural works take on amorphous associations with limbs, skin and touch, I also explore other mediums such as film and textiles, drawing on the fluidity and transience of material and bodily worlds.&nbsp; My approach to creating is to move between intuitive and playful to considered and controlled; an oscillation between conscious and unconscious making, to allow the unknown to enter into the making process. General maturity is most often displayed through the relationship between oneself and others and through their interaction with the world. Becoming mature is shifting from exclusive self interest to prioritizing more the collective. A person who has undergone this maturing process becomes objective, rational, and controllable. This is a process which alleviates the pull of emotion. Emotions, from birth, are an essential part of a human identity outside of maturity. The process of becoming mature puts the nature of being human and the desire to be rational into opposition and raises a question about how to keep the two states unified. Color on the other hand always retains its original emotional character. That is the reason I am fascinated by color within photography. Nowadays colors are not only sourced from the physical world, but the digital one as well. In modern society we are surrounded by new colors and emotions, creating an ever more chaotic circumstance in which to grow up. Keeping aware of our inner selves on our path to maturity is more and more difficult. The 28 pieces of work in this exhibition aim to illustrate four periods of maturity through which we need to throw ourselves. Discovery, exploration, doubt, and at last acceptance are shown. Our bodies refresh themselves cellularly on a seven year cycle. As such I’ve represented each of these four periods with seven images. In this project I see myself as an art reproduction photographer, making copies of the ever-changing canvas, were Nature, the greatest artist of all, works on the never-ending art piece, the Earth. The photographs are taken from an ultra light aircraft flying 150 to 300 meters above the ground. Looking at Traditional Crafts with New Eyes. &nbsp;7/23 – 8/12 &nbsp;2023 In this three-week workshop participants will be guided, both in studio and out, by Agnes Fries and the Menlo Staff, Zhou YuYe and Nick Vest. With over thirty years of Jingdezhen experience shared between these three instructors, participants will have the unique opportunity to learn the magic of working in the Porcelain Capitol in a fully integrated fashion. With artisans specializing in mold making, tile making, casting, carving, painting, throwing, and any other ceramic process you can imagine right up to 3d printing, water-jet cutting, and PVD surfacing, Jingdezhen makes anything possible in ceramics. In addition to navigating Jingdezhen as makers, participants will explore the culture of Jingdezhen through visits to a selection of the dozens of museums and historical sites in and around the birthplace of porcelain. Demonstrations from local masters of traditional skills, and experiential introductions to the cultural heritage of Jingdezhen and China at large will leave participants with new skills, cherish-able memories, and a greater understanding of what life and work is like here in this special place. For international registrants the workshop cost, starting at 13,000 RMB, includes housing, studio space, materials, visa and travel support, and all planned activities and excursions. Participants are provided a pricate room in an economy hotel, housing can be upgraded at cost. International registration for those without a valid Visa is open until 6/15 or until the roster is full. Domestic registration or registration for those with an already valid Visa is 9000 RMB but does not include housing, we will help if securing housing that fits your needs. Working mainly in porcelain Agnes approaches the material with graphic perception. Through taking in, letting go, and learning to seek a meaningful path through the poetic chaos of Jingdezhen and the creative process itself, participants will be led to the kind of formal and conceptual artistic growth, unique to this special place, that all of us “Jing Piao” have come to value so highly. “Since my first visit in 2008 the city of Jingdezhen has been my main source of inspiration. The energy of such a sizable entity centering around the use of porcelain, and the porcelain itself -it’s a current you can tap into and get overwhelmed by or even addicted to! My work usually begins with working and searching, roaming studios, antique markets or shopping malls. A certain shade of yellow or a plastic bucket – I never know what can be the seed of a new piece. As a designer I try to be as open and attentive as possible so I can put something out with the confidence that I haven’t seen it’s like before. The work I make should be functional not necessarily in use alone but rather provide function through the whole path of its production. Kala will lead group projects to initiate experimental learning centered on investigations into the physical and conceptual nuances of making with porcelain in the extraordinary setting of Jingdezhen, the Porcelain Capitol City. In addition to the studio classroom experience with Kala, participants will have the chance to learn through demonstrations by master blue and white painters, mold makers, and other artists and artisans living in Jingdezhen both foreign and local. Interactions with professional slip casters, glazers, throwers, kiln firers, decal onlayers, flower makers, and any other kind of ceramic and industry related worker imaginable will change the way the act of ceramic making can be conceptualized. In addition, field trips to ceramic museums, the famous Jingdezhen “ghost” antique market, historic production centers, modern ceramic factories, and the mountain that is original source of porcelain will fill out the three week course. To underscore the regard for studio practice and process as a significant factor in any created object we will document our experiences through photography, assemblage, collection, and writings. These records will be turned into a depiction of each participants Jingdezhen experience, and will accompany the made objects that result from each persons explorations. A group exhibition at MenLo gallery will mark the end of the session with an opening reception open to artists, artisans, and all the new friends made in Jingdezhen. &nbsp; The cost of the session is $1,400 per student which includes housing for the 3 weeks session + up to 5 days before or after, personal studio space, studio materials, transportation upon arrival in jingdezhen, and transportation for all field trips. Her work explores dynamic systems and sustainable practices within the intersection of design, production, and the handmade.&nbsp; Working with clay for 20 years, Kala’s approach to ceramic design and art is informed by her belief that it is all an experiment and it is all relevant. Field Recognition:&nbsp;National Endowment for the Arts Grant (2017); MFA Ceramics, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (2009); BFA Ceramics, SUNY New Paltz (2002); Moravian Pottery &amp; Tiles Works (2002-2005, PA); apprenticeship with Donna Polseno &amp; Richard Hensley (2005-2007, VA).&nbsp; She taught ceramics at Alfred University for five years and at various universities and art centers across NY and California. Kala joined us in 2019 as a resident and leader of our “porcelain Echoes” summer session. Kala created a body of work based around photos of the pacific ocean taken before her residency in California by working with a Jingdezhen factory to make high temperature decals along with sheets of pure gold luster and layering the two. She also found inspiration in the streets of “Old Factory” where all kinds of functional reradymades can be found.
